Walter在洛杉矶预看了该电影，Epic方面找来了Gloria Estefan唱主题曲。当时Walter正和Mariah合作Music Box大碟。他叙述：“我和Mariah在纽约录音室工作，在一段小休时，我告诉Mariah关于该片和写主题曲的事。在两小时内，我们有了这非常好听的初步旋律，更起名此曲为Hero。这首歌当初根本不是给Mariah唱的，在她创作时，她是想着该怎么给Gloria编曲的。我们写了一首连Mariah当时也说是太过典型的流行曲。”
两人几乎完成了这首歌的词曲，就在这时，Tommy走进录音室，他听了这首歌后就问我们是怎么一回事，Mariah说这是为电影Hero写的主题曲，据Walter的描述，Tommy的反应是：“开玩笑，你不能将这么棒的一首歌给了那部戏，留给你自己，你必须唱这首歌。”（英明啦，汤米先生。）
因为之前是为电影而写，所以Mariah在写词上偏向该戏的路向，一旦决定把歌留给自己后，Mariah重新执笔，将歌词私人化，倾诉她内心想要叙述的挣扎和信念。Walter过后跟Epic公司方面交代他们写不出什么好的主题曲，Gloria因此也没听到这首原本打算给她的歌曲，她演唱的电影最终主题曲Heart Of A Hero，是Luther Vandross的作品。
Hero再次耀眼全美，成为Billboard Hot 100四周冠军单曲。在这之前，Mariah宣布将单曲销量所得的盈利全捐给 12月7日Long Island Rail Road枪击案的受害者家属。该悲剧发生的三天后，Mariah在MSG演唱了Hero，并将此曲送给制伏枪击手的三位英雄。Walter对当时观众的反应记忆犹新，他说：“我们开始弹奏此曲，我随意往楼上看去，看见楼上站着一个中年男子，灯光打到他脸上时，我发现他的眼眶泛泪。我再看看台下的观众，很多人都哭了，那时我才意识到这首歌的真正力量。”
